In the very heart of Jakarta, Jalan Thamrin has lots of eateries to choose from. You can find food to suit your taste and budget in Plaza Indonesia, the Jakarta Theatre building, the Sarinah department store as well as in all the leading hotels.

Gourmets and seekers of a good time will adore Kemang in the south of Jakarta. That's because Kemang has the highest number of fine Jakarta dining places with mouth-watering cuisine from around the world. Besides the local dishes, these eateries offer a variety of international cuisine, including Lebanese, French, Italian, American, Brazilian and Mexican. You can even sample the throbbing night life of the city in its nightclubs, bars with live music and discos. The best hot spots are to be found on the Jalan Kemang Raya, which is Kemang's "Main Street".

If you are looking for eateries with an air of adventure and local colour in the evening hours, try the trendy Kafe Tenda ("Tented Cafés") along the main thoroughfares and in the Gading Batavia Food Promenade in Jalan Boulevard Barat (Kelapa gading-north Jakarta). You can also find these unusual cafes in some vacant development zones of the city. What's more, the food is relatively affordable, and the experience unforgettable.

Local Cuisine

If you fancy something spicy, try the Dutch Sop iga sapi, a beef spare rib soup full of Indonesian spices. On the lighter side there's the Soto betawi, a coconut milk broth with intestines, beef tendons and tripe.

Don't miss out on the kerak telor, a delicacy made from an omelette cooked with glutinous rice, served with shredded coconut and topping of dried shrimp. Another hot favourite is ketoprak -- rice roll, bean sprouts, tofu and crackers in peanut sauce. Also popular on the streets is Nasi Ulam -- rice cooked in coconut milk accompanied with sweet fried tempe, fried minced beef, lots of other toppings, sambal (chilli sauce) and cucumber.

You can get yourself a delicious mid-morning snack or a whole meal from the gerobak/kakilima carts that wander the city selling local food. Try the gado-gado (a salad with peanut sauce, usually served with steamed rice and krupuk crackers), soto (clear soup with beef slices, veal and chicken) and sate (broiled skewered meat, with peanut or soya sauce). And don't forget to sample Jakarta's favourite soup, sop kaki, made from the boiled tendon of a cow's or goat's leg.

Street Food

The street delicacies of Jakarta are famous, with every region offering its own brand of street food. Some places for exceptional street food are Muara Karang/Pluit (seafood), Kelapa Gading (seafood), Tennis Sized Meatballs (Blok S, South Jakarta) and "Nasi Uduk" (Kebon Kacang, Central Jakarta). The prices vary from Rp. 5,000 to Rp. 25,000.

Your stomach might need some time to get used to the spices in the local food, so give the street food a wide berth until you have adjusted to the Indonesian climate for at least two weeks.
